Photographing Bangor

Bangor, North Wales is the city I was born in, and I spent much of my formative years as a child, teenager and young man sampling what the city had to offer. But Bangor has faced many challenges in recent years: multiple recessions; internet shopping; Brexit; Covid. And now the longest high street in Wales looks very different to the road I remember, mirroring what can be seen in hundreds of towns across the UK. But, through my photographic practice I still see snippets of hope: the opening of Bwyd Da, a cafe which employs people attending the nearby Penrhyn House drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre and/or people living in homeless accommodation in Bangor; local students choosing Bangor as their place of study for the quieter pace of life, a welcome change from larger, busier cities like Manchester and London. Armed with my camera I have decided to document my place of birth from a place of honesty and hope. Hopefully you will see some of this in my pictures below.
